About the Speaker
Prof. Joel C. Cornista is an Assistant Professor of Microbiology at the University of the Philippines Manila and a Diplomate in Microbiology by the Philippine Academy for Microbiology. He served as Country Ambassador to the Philippines of the American Society for Microbiology (2018–2023) and has been an ASM Fellow since 2012. A former President of the Philippine Society for Microbiology (2019–2021), he has held leadership roles in the society for nearly 15 years. He is presently the Vice Chair of the Microbiology Consortium of the Philippines and incoming President of the Philippine Society for Probiotics and Functional Foods. Prof. Cornista is a Board member of the Philippine Network for Microbial Culture Collections (2014–2016) and is active in several scientific organizations. He holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Microbiology from Kyoto University, Japan and Masters degree in Microbiology from University of the Philippines. Currently, he is the Lead Researcher for Environmental Microbiology of the Applied Microbiology for Health and Environment Research Group (AMHERG) of UP Manila.
