About the Speaker

Prof. Chun-Lin Lee Imbalances in the gut microbiota are closely linked to metabolic syndrome, and recent studies have shown that enhancing next-generation probiotics such as Akkermansia can improve lipid metabolism, insulin resistance, and chronic inflammation. Building on this concept, we developed Monascus pilosus SWM-008–fermented red mold rice, which is free from monacolin K and citrinin. Its monascinol, monascin, and polysaccharides modulate the gut microbiota and increase beneficial bacteria, including Akkermansia, in normal-diet animal models. In diabetes, nonalcoholic fatty liver, and obesity animal models, SWM-008 exerted a synergistic “gut microbiota modulation and lipid metabolism regulation” mechanism, promoting lipid excretion, enhancing fatty acid metabolism, suppressing lipid droplet formation, improving insulin resistance, and regulating AMPK and inflammatory pathways. These effects led to systemic improvements in blood lipids, body fat, fatty liver, and glucose indices, highlighting SWM-008 as a novel strategy to support the gut microbiota and next-generation probiotics for managing metabolic syndrome.
