About the Speaker

Dr. Ratha Mahendran characterized the mitochondria of the lower eukaryote Physarum polycephalum, an acellular slime mold, during her doctoral studies. She did her post-doctoral training at the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology, Singapore, on mammalian protein kinase activation and latterly her research has been focused on bladder cancer working with clinicians to improve the understanding of the response of bladder cancer patients to Mycobacterium bovis, Bacillus Calmette Guérin (BCG) as well as the development of novel therapies using murine models of bladder cancer. In collaboration with A/P Lee Yuan Kun the use of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG to treat bladder cancer was evaluated in mice. Her present focus in on genetic deletions in the glutathione S-transferase theta genes and their impact on immune modulation. .
